Due to rapid development of biology and technology industries across the globe, “Science to Business” has been one of the important criteria being focused by Malaysia government upon strategizing National Biotechnology Policy in 2005. The main focus of National Biotechnology Policy is to transform biotechnology industry in Malaysia into one of the key economic contributor in the nation.
In addition, National Biotechnology Policy also serves as driver and support towards Malaysia in the effort of evolving as a country with a knowledge-based economy. Under National Biotechnology Policy, three National Biotechnology Institute named as Malaysia Agro Biotechnology Institute, Malaysia Institute of Pharmaceuticals and Nutraceuticals and Malaysia Genome Institute have been established in order to execute the objective of generating national economy through biotechnology industry.
In accordance with the government’s effort to steer Malaysia economy with the participation of biotechnology industry, several investments have been allocated to this developing industry. Some of the significant investments include:
- Bio methionine plant project involves collaboration between Malaysia, South Korea and French with the investments of RM 2 billion
- Integrated Lobster Aquaculture Park (iLAP) in Sabah is a joint venture project between Malaysia and Darden Aquasciences Sdn. Bhd. with the investments worth RM 1.8 billion
- Project to produce carbohydrate and isobutanol from woody biomass in Kertih Biopolymer Park has attract interest of US based company, GEVO Inc. with the investments of RM 1.65 billion
