Celebrating Aspirations: Scholarship and Recognition Ceremony

12 September 2024 | Dewan Indasari, Universiti Geomatika Malaysia (UGM)

Universiti Geomatika Malaysia (UGM) students were celebrated in a special ceremony organized by Yayasan Geomatika, where their academic potential and sporting achievements were recognized. The event, held at Dewan Indasari UGM, emphasized UGM’s ongoing commitment to supporting its students in overcoming challenges, in line with the goals of SDG 1 (No Poverty) and SDG 2 (Zero Hunger).

At the core of the event was the presentation of letters of support to UGM students from the August 2024 intake. These letters, provided by Yayasan Geomatika, acknowledge the students’ academic potential and serve as vital encouragement to continue their educational journey. The initiative aligns with SDG 1, focusing on ensuring access to education regardless of financial circumstances. By alleviating some of the financial burdens faced by students, UGM contributes to breaking the cycle of poverty and creating opportunities for a brighter future.

In her speech, Prof. Datin Nazirah Mohaizi, Vice President 1 of UGM and trustee of Yayasan Geomatika, highlighted the importance of providing financial aid to students in need. She reaffirmed UGM’s dedication to helping students from all backgrounds, ensuring that economic barriers do not prevent them from achieving their educational goals.

The event also celebrated UGM athletes who recently achieved commendable success at the 2024 MASISWA sports events. These accomplishments demonstrate the university’s holistic approach to student development, encouraging excellence both inside and outside the classroom. By supporting student athletes, UGM not only fosters personal growth but also promotes the physical and mental well-being necessary for their academic success, which is closely tied to SDG 2 (Zero Hunger). Proper nutrition and well-being are crucial in enabling students to perform at their best in both academics and sports.

Among the students honored were:

  • Chin Voon Song and Muhamad Afif Bin Jjuinin for their third-place finish in E-Sport Aerodance,
  • Izlan Hadi Bin Amran and Faiz Danial Bin Ruslan for their achievements in E-Sport (FIFA),
  • Dhia Qistina Binti Mohd Fauzi and Kirsseny A/P Kumar for excelling in chess,
  • Nur Hairulafiqa Binti Mohd Asri and Siti Robbani Nadira Binti Muhammad for their contributions in netball,
  • Guirassy Ahmed Salim and Hafiy Qusyairie Bin Nizam for their outstanding performance in futsal.

A highlight of the ceremony was the presentation of RM 1 million from Yayasan Geomatika to Universiti Geomatika Malaysia. This substantial donation is earmarked for supporting scholarships and student programs, ensuring that financial hardship does not stand in the way of academic achievement. This initiative is directly in line with SDG 1 (No Poverty), as it provides financial relief and enables students to focus on their studies without the added stress of economic constraints.

In addition, UGM’s ongoing support for its students contributes to SDG 2 (Zero Hunger), as the university recognizes the importance of addressing food security issues among students. By ensuring that students have access to basic needs like nutrition, UGM fosters an environment where students can fully engage in their education and personal development.

This event exemplifies the collaborative efforts between Yayasan Geomatika and UGM to reduce poverty and address hunger, in alignment with SDG 1 and SDG 2. By providing financial and nutritional support to its students, UGM continues to empower the next generation of leaders, equipping them with the tools they need to thrive.

The ceremony concluded with a group photo session, as the UGM community celebrated the achievements of its students and the impact of initiatives designed to uplift those in need. With the generous donation from Yayasan Geomatika and the ongoing support for students, UGM is paving the way for a future where poverty and hunger no longer hinder academic success.
