University of Geomatika Malaysia (UGM) recently joined hands with the Youth and Sports Office of the Titiwangsa and Setiawangsa area to participate in the Friends of the Earth Programme: Community Plogging, a jungle trekking activity at Sungai Pisang. This event, known as “Jom Jejak Sungai Pisang,” saw enthusiastic involvement from UGM students who combined fitness with environmental conservation, demonstrating a strong commitment to both nature and well-being.
The Heart of the Program: Environmental Stewardship and Health The core objective of this program is to promote a healthy lifestyle through jungle trekking while simultaneously cleaning the serene Sungai Pisang River. Participants not only enjoyed the lush beauty of nature but also took active steps to preserve it by collecting litter along the trail. This initiative serves as a reminder of the importance of maintaining a clean environment and reflects the values of sustainability.
Relating the program to SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-Being), the plogging activity encouraged physical exercise, which is essential for improving mental and physical health. The jungle trekking aspect of the event promoted cardiovascular fitness, endurance, and overall well-being, while the tranquil natural environment contributed to stress relief and mental clarity. By integrating physical activity with a noble cause, participants experienced the benefits of a healthy lifestyle.
Environmental Conservation: An SDG 15 Connection The program also aligns with SDG 15 (Life on Land), focusing on protecting, restoring, and promoting the sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems. The plogging event was an opportunity to foster awareness about the detrimental impact of litter on the environment, particularly on river ecosystems. By cleaning Sungai Pisang, participants helped protect the biodiversity of the area and contributed to preserving the natural habitats of the flora and fauna surrounding the river.
A Growing Movement of Change The Jom Jejak Sungai Pisang program has ignited a passion for environmental responsibility among UGM students, inspiring them to take active roles in preserving nature. By participating in this initiative, they have become advocates for sustainable practices, setting a positive example for their peers and the wider community.
In conclusion, UGM’s involvement in the Friends of the Earth Programme is a testament to the university’s commitment to nurturing future leaders who are conscious of both their health and the environment. The collaboration with the Youth and Sports Office in this meaningful activity exemplifies the spirit of working together for a healthier and more sustainable future, resonating strongly with SDG 3 and SDG 15.
