On Wednesday, August 7, 2024, the University of Geomatika Malaysia (UGM) celebrated the Independence Festival 2024 (FESKEM 2024) and the Orientation & Empowerment Program for new students. The event, held at the Setiawangsa Field, marked the beginning of the new academic session and celebrated the spirit of Malaysian independence while aligning with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 3 and 11.
The day began with a brief opening speech by Prof. Datin Nazirah, President 1 of UGM. Her inspiring words set the tone for the festival as she officially launched FESKEM 2024. Following her address, Prof. Datin Nazirah handed over the Jalur Gemilang to representatives from various departments and faculties, initiating the “Fly the Jalur Gemilang” campaign. This symbolic gesture encouraged staff to proudly display the national flag, fostering a sense of patriotism and unity among the university community.
The morning continued with a vibrant Merdeka aerobics session, involving top management, staff, and new students. This activity directly supported SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being) by promoting physical fitness and encouraging a healthy lifestyle among participants. Engaging in physical exercise is crucial for maintaining mental and physical health, and this session was a fun way to highlight the importance of well-being within the university.
As the day progressed, students were divided into groups and participated in various sports activities. These fun and engaging games not only provided an excellent opportunity for new students to connect, build friendships, and work as a team but also supported SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities). The sense of community and social cohesion fostered through these activities is essential for creating inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable environments.
The event concluded with a hearty lunch, allowing everyone to relax and enjoy a meal together. As the program drew to a close, students and staff left with a sense of accomplishment and community, looking forward to the exciting academic journey ahead.
The Independence Festival 2024 and the Orientation & Empowerment Program successfully brought together the university community, celebrating Malaysia’s rich heritage while welcoming the newest members of the UGM family. It was a day filled with joy, unity, and the promise of new beginnings. The event’s alignment with SDGs 3 and 11 underscored UGM’s commitment to promoting health and well-being, as well as fostering sustainable and inclusive communities.
